Luxury River Cruise Lines for International Sailings
While Europe is the leading international destination for luxury river cruises for multi-generational travelers, enriching river voyages are available in a variety of locations around the globe. These immersive sailings offer a vivid tapestry of culture, heritage and learning experiences. If you are considering an international river voyage, here are the best luxury river cruise lines for exploring the world with multiple generations.
AmaWaterways River Cruises
Founded in 2002, AmaWaterways offers enriching river cruises on 31 custom-designed ships this year, with a future fleet of more than 50 ships confirmed to date. The cruise line currently sails on 16 rivers in 27 countries. Multi-generational family groups can enjoy exciting itineraries on Europe’s most spectacular waterways and unique voyages on Southeast Asia’s Mekong River, Africa’s Chobe River, Egypt’s Nile River and Colombia’s Magdalena River.

AmaWaterways’ river cruises are excellent choices for multi-generational travel. The cruise line’s commitment to family and multi-generational river cruising has resulted in game-changing family-related initiatives and partnerships. AmaWaterways was the first river cruise line to design river ships specifically to match families’ needs. Eight ships have connecting staterooms well-suited for family groups, and triple and quad accommodations are also available.
The cruise line’s ships feature contemporary decor and amenities, including fitness centers, sun decks and spa facilities. AmaWaterways has complimentary bicycles onboard, including child-size bikes, for off-ship exploring in Europe. Most of the AmaWaterways fleet has heated Sun Deck pools. The line’s innovative AmaMagna offers additional amenities for families.
Fares include spacious accommodations, onboard meals, some drinks, entertainment and enrichment programs, a wide range of small group shore excursions and many other inclusions. Since gentle walkers, regular and active tours are available, multi-generational family members can explore at their own pace. AmaWaterways requires children to be at least four years old to sail on their river cruises in Europe and Southeast Asia. For Africa river cruise safari itineraries, the minimum age is 12 years old.
AmaWaterways and Adventures by Disney have partnered on family-focused river cruises, launching their first sailings on the Danube together in 2016. Adventures by Disney now offers a variety of family-friendly European river cruise itineraries on AmaWaterways ships. All Adventures by Disney river cruises feature dedicated Disney-trained Adventure Guides and activities for kids, teens and adults.

Tauck and Tauck Bridges River Cruises
Tauck has been a family-owned travel company for over 100 years, providing highly acclaimed tours and cruises. Tauck offers luxury, all-inclusive river cruise experiences along all of Europe’s major waterways. The company’s 11 spacious riverboats carry an average of 110 guests, with the largest ships accommodating no more than 130 passengers. Nearly two-thirds of the cabins on Tauck’s riverboats are 225 square feet or larger, and 300-square-foot suites are available to accommodate families of four.

Multi-generational travel continues to be one of the strongest trends Tauck is seeing. In 2010, Tauck’s family-focused brand, Tauck Bridges, offered its first river cruise specifically designed for families and multi-generational groups. This year, Tauck Bridges is offering six river cruise itineraries for families on 24 departure dates and 25 departures in 2027. Riverside Luxury Cruises offers an upscale European river cruise experience for multi-generational families seeking five-star accommodations, gourmet dining and personalized service. The cruise line currently sails three ships, operating itineraries on the Danube River, the Rhône and Saône Rivers, and the Rhine, Main and Moselle Rivers. Two of the ships carry up to 110 guests, and the third carries up to 162 guests. A fourth ship accommodating up to 110 guests will join the Riverside Luxury Cruises fleet next year.

Riverside’s luxurious all-suite accommodations are an attractive selling point for multi-generational families. Trafalgar River Cruises
Trafalgar has been offering outstanding guided land tours around the globe for nearly 80 years. Some of the company’s land tours are specifically designed for families and are a superb choice for multi-generational groups. Now, the brand brings this expertise to Trafalgar River Cruises, which began sailing two ships along Europe’s Rhine and Danube this year. A third ship will join the fleet next year, offering voyages on the Seine River.

Trafalgar’s river cruise program welcomes families with children aged five and older. Trafalgar River Cruises’ three ships accommodate 126 to 128 guests. All ships feature connecting staterooms. This option allows multi-generational families to stay close while still preserving private space. Bicycles are available onboard each ship, and the top deck has a large chessboard perfect for playing games together.
Trafalgar offers a premium onboard experience along with activities, shore excursions and extensions that appeal to families and multi-generational groups. Trafalgar’s itinerary structure allows all generations to choose their own pace, with options like biking along the Rhine, hiking through the Bavarian countryside, wine tasting at a historic castle in Koblenz, a food tour through Budapest's market halls, and an immersive Mozart tribute in Vienna. Trafalgar also offers MAKE TRAVEL MATTER® Experiences and Be My Guest dining, which take guests into local communities and family-run businesses.
In addition to the five lines profiled above, more brands are entering the market due to river cruising’s growing appeal. Celebrity Cruises’ ocean-going voyages have been a popular choice for multi-generational travelers, and Celebrity River Cruises will begin European river cruise sailings on the Danube and Rhine next year. Children ages four and older are welcome to sail. Staterooms on Celebrity’s 2027 river cruise departures sold out quickly when announced. Some are occasionally becoming available on select sailings, however, as guest cancellations occur.
